Pick Four Blog Hop - Day 4

It's finally my turn to share with you Sue Abrey's new book, Pick Four

Sue has provided very detailed instructions, beautifully illustrated, for making 12 gorgeous quilts in this book.  The patterns are suitable for beginning quilters as well as more experienced quilters.

When I'm looking for a new quilting book, I usually flip through it to see if I like the projects.  I definitely love all the projects in this book, but the first thing that really impressed me was that Sue has included close-up photos of the quilting on each of the projects, along with a section explaining the process for choosing the quilting design for each one.  This is in addition to a separate chapter on quilting options!  How many times have you finished piecing a quilt top and wondered, "How will I quilt it?" Reading Sue's comments about the quilting will certainly give you ideas.

The book also includes a section on choosing fabrics for your quilt.  If you lack confidence in choosing fabrics, just use Sue's helpful hints to find "clues" in the fabric, and you'll soon be selecting fabrics effortlessly for a stunning quilt.

Sue and I have frequently discussed the differences in our quilting styles.  Sue, along with many others, prefers quilts with limited fabrics. The book is written with these quilters in mind.  Also, beginning quilters may not have a huge stash of fabrics to choose from.  But what if you do like scrap quilts?  Don't worry, I've already checked -- my opinion is that each of these designs would make a wonderful scrap quilt.

Sue will  be giving away an autographed copy of Pick Four to one lucky person who comments on this post.  If you'd like to be that lucky person, leave a comment here and answer this question:

When you "Pick Four," what color will be in at least one of your fabrics?

There are still lots of stops left on the tour.  If you haven't visited Hazel, Mary, and Pat, go now!
  The rest of the stops:
See you at Barb's tomorrow!

Kim

p.s. - To those you who may be in the path of Irene, my thoughts and prayers are with you.
Be safe!

Entries are now closed.  I'll announce the winner on 8/31.

Definitely Pink. I love pink. And would love the book.

Oooh - those patterns are irresistible!

I usually add some red, but definitely white.

Mary on Lake Pulaski said...

I would go for red for my first quilt from this book!

Another Floridian nice to meet you. In picking four colors the color that would have to be in one of the fabrics would be blue. It's my favorite though oddly one of my least favorite to match. Does it go towards dark, towards purple, silver, grey and so on. This was something I never noticed in my clothes but I sure notice it in quilts!

Lisa England said...

I think at least one of my fabrics would have some yellow. And the brighter, the better! This book looks great. The color options and quilting suggestions are a definite plus that you don't get in every quilt book.

Silverthimble said...

I would pick green! Green is my favorite colour and I consider green to be a neutral--it goes with everything!

sewali said...

I'm pretty sure either pink or green or both pink AND green would feature in my choices!

Sallie said...

I love the second quilt you show. Mine would have to have blue! I'd probably choose 2 shades of blue, a green, and champagne for my pick 4. Thanks for the giveaway!

canuckquilter said...

Hmmm, I'm a blue gal - love all sorts of blues - but then I saw the comment about yellow and that popped into my head too. I'll need the book to see if I can make both work. Or maybe I'd just need to make two quilt...oh darn!

sewali said...

I meant to say, I love your Scrap Basket books, I've made Summer Breeze with a jelly roll from the Eden range by Lila Tueller, you can see the finished quilt at http://oaktree-quilts.blogspot.com/2011/05/happy-quilt-is-finished.html

Purple! I love purple and lately it has appeared in a lot of my quilts. I may choose blue though because my stash is overflowing with blues at the moment.

Moni said...

I love so many colors, but I tend to earthy deep tones of red or purple augmented with greens and blues. Bits of orange and/or yellow to top everything off!

Pokey said...

RED is always on the "collection" stack, cannot have too much of it, lol
Oh, I send my prayers for the east coast too, Keep them safe!

Beige unless you could the rich purple backing! I'm collecting fabrics for Stepping Stones. Love Sue's book!

Exuberantcolor/Wanda S Hanson said...

Any color on the warm side of the color wheel will usually be in every quilt. This book looks interesting.

Kathy S. said...

One of my four colors will be GREEN. LOVE greens such as forest greens. But sometimes I think everything goes with green because I love it so much. What is important is that you said, "The book also includes a section on choosing fabrics for your quilt. If you lack confidence in choosing fabrics, just use Sue's helpful hints to find "clues" in the fabric, and you'll soon be selecting fabrics effortlessly for a stunning quilt." I need that help! Come on lucky random thingy -- pick me!

Anne said...

I spent some time this summer stash-sorting and trying to bring all my fabrics together from their various haunts in the house into one central location. It is amazing what long-forgotten pieces surface when one does this! And I found a lovely combination of four fabrics (with yardage, not just small pieces!) that would lend itself beautifully to a project from this book - rich green, tan and rust. Might be an old-style combination, but I think it would still look great.

Barb said...

I am commenting now before Irene hits! I will say that there will definitely be a tone of blue, blue/green in my quilt! Thanks so much for the chance to win a signed book!

Nancy said...

Orange, it is really a pop color.
