It seems I'm having a little trouble focusing on one project lately. But since there are only three more rows to go on this pioneer braid quilt, I decided to work on it today. This quilt started with a charm pack of Cinnamon Stars by Fig Tree Quilts. I added two more charm packs, and then some fabrics from two more Fig Tree lines, and a couple of pieces from Sandy Gervais. I really love it when designers incorporate a color from a previous line into a new one. The prints are different, and usually a little darker or lighter, so it tends to make my quilts look scrappy.
I've been auditioning some batik 2 1/2" strips for my next project, and thought I'd share a tip about contrast. When contrast is important in a design, I like to take a digital picture of the fabrics, then open the picture in my photo editing software and remove the color (saturation). This gives me a clearer picture of how the light and dark fabrics relate to each other. This probably isn't the best example, but you get the idea. If you don't have a simple-to-use photo editing program, just take a black-and-white picture with your digital camera.

Your pioneer braid project is lovely. The Cinnamon Stars fabric line was a definite favorite from Fig Tree. I made a delightful quilt with that line.
Great tip for help with contrast.
The braid quilt is going to be a hit! It looks darker than I would expect with Fig Tree fabrics. I do not have any of the Cinnamon Stars fabric. The combo of old and new is wonderful in this quilt.
I sure do like that pioneer braid, and a good way to use up a couple of charm packs. That's a really good idea about taking a b&w photo to see the contrast. I wouldn't have guessed from the color photo that the lights are all so close in value.
First I want to thank you for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment! Second I want to tell you how much I love your new book! Almost every evening I go through it but still can't figure out which quilt I want to do first. The fabrics for each quilt are perfect. Thanks for all the inspiration and I will let you know which I will pick to do first :D
The braid quilt is gorgeous...it is so nice to see a braid quilt in batiks. This will be another great quilt from 2.5" strips.
I LOVE the first quilt...the fabrics really work together...and the contrast info was great as well...I'd never thought about checking contrast that way!
I think we all have trouble focusing sometimes. Especially when there are so many quilts to be made! Sometimes my head spins with all the ideas I have and want to do! :0)
I love the way your braid quilt turned out! Very beautiful!
Thanks for the fabric auditioning tip. Great idea!
I really like the braid.
My next quilt is going to be a braid quilt, there is one on the front cover of the Down Under Quilt magazine think issue 132, I am getting one next week. When I saw it I knew I had to make it. It was all done is scraps. Love your batiks too.
Love your braid quilt. And love the idea about finding your contrast/value. I just saw Carol Taylor and she makes beautiful quilts using value very effectively. I was wondering how to see the values like she does. Thanks for sharing this great idea.
I am a fan of braid quilts, so of course I loved yours, thanks for showing it to us. Your tip about seeing contrast was great, thanks for that too.
I think it is difficult to quilt when the pool is calling me. Thanks for the digital photo advice. I am sure I will give it a try.
Writing to you just hours before shuttle picks me up to return me to the airport for home. We´ve had a wonderful tropical vacation! Bummer all good things come to an end. Your braids look awesome. I`ll be checking in later at home and settled.
I love these braids -- I've got a braid quilt on my list too and this one makes me want to start cutting - too bad I've got other things ahead of it.
Thanks for the tip! I love the pioneer braid quilt.
